Playground Turf Installation Across the GTA

Create safe, cushioned play areas for children with playground-grade artificial turf from Toronto Turf Pros. Serving schools, parks and homeowners across the Greater Toronto Area.

Safety First

Safety Benefits of Playground Artificial Turf

When it comes to children’s play areas, safety is the top priority. Playground-grade artificial turf is engineered from the ground up with child safety in mind. Here’s how it protects the children who use it. For a wider look at how turf compares with a real lawn for a busy family yard, see our guide on artificial grass vs natural grass in Toronto.

1. Impact-Absorbing Cushion Layer

Playground turf systems include a thick foam or rubber shock-absorption pad beneath the turf surface. This pad is rated to a Critical Fall Height that determines the maximum safe fall distance, giving parents and administrators objective safety assurance.

2. No Splinters, Pebbles or Sharp Edges

Wood chips and gravel shift and scatter, leaving hard, sharp debris that causes cuts and trips. Artificial turf provides a uniform, clear surface with no loose material that can be kicked up, tripped on or thrown by playing children.

3. Non-Toxic and Lead-Free

Our playground turf products are independently tested and certified free from lead and heavy metals. Children who put their hands on the ground or roll in the grass are not exposed to harmful substances, giving parents genuine peace of mind.

4. Allergy-Friendly Surface

Natural grass produces pollen and harbours moulds that trigger allergies in many children. Synthetic turf eliminates grass pollen entirely, making outdoor play accessible for children who suffer from grass allergies throughout the GTA’s spring and summer seasons.

5. Eliminates Mud and Trip Hazards

Wet weather turns natural play areas into muddy, slippery zones that increase fall risk and keep children indoors. Playground turf drains rapidly and maintains a consistent, secure surface that remains safe for children to run and play on even after heavy GTA rainstorms.

6. ADA Accessible Surface

Firm, flat artificial turf provides a stable surface for children using wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids. Unlike loose fill alternatives that resist wheelchair movement, turf creates an accessible play environment for children of all abilities.

Where We Install

Playground Turf Applications Across the GTA

Toronto Turf Pros installs playground turf for a wide range of residential and institutional clients throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Each application has unique requirements, and we spec every project appropriately for its intended use and user age range. From family backyards in Newmarket to municipal parks, we tailor the build to the site, and a home play zone often sits alongside a wider backyard turf lawn.

Residential backyards: Families with young children often want a dedicated play zone with equipment, sandbox surrounds or open running space. We create backyard play areas that keep children safe and parents sane about the mess being tracked indoors.

Schools and daycares: School playgrounds across Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga and Markham trust synthetic turf to provide a consistently safe, clean surface for hundreds of children every day. We work with school administrators and facilities managers to spec projects that meet current playground safety standards.

Community parks and recreation facilities: Municipal parks departments and community associations choose synthetic turf for play areas because it reduces ongoing maintenance costs while keeping play surfaces consistently safe and available throughout the season.

Commercial properties: Apartment buildings, condominium complexes and commercial properties with children’s amenities rely on playground turf to create child-safe common areas that require minimal management.

How We Install

Playground Turf Installation Process

Step 1: Safety Assessment and Critical Fall Height Planning

We review your play equipment heights and help you select a shock pad system rated to the appropriate Critical Fall Height for each piece of equipment. Safety compliance is determined at this stage, before any material is ordered or installed.

Step 2: Existing Surface Removal and Grading

Existing surfaces, whether natural grass, wood chips or gravel, are completely removed. The ground is graded and compacted to provide proper drainage and a stable sub-base. Edge restraints are installed around the perimeter to hold the system in place.

Step 3: Drainage Base Installation

A crushed stone drainage base is compacted and leveled. Proper drainage beneath a playground is especially important, as waterlogged ground can cause the shock pad to soften and lose its impact attenuation properties over time.

Step 4: Shock Pad Installation

The foam or rubber shock absorption pad is laid over the prepared base. Pads are cut and fitted precisely around equipment footings, posts and anchors so no gaps exist beneath the turf where a child could land without protection.

Step 5: Playground Turf Installation

We lay the playground-grade turf over the shock pad, cutting carefully around all equipment and anchor points. Seams are joined with industrial adhesive and mechanically secured to prevent lifting or separation under heavy daily use by children.

Step 6: Final Safety Inspection and Handover

We conduct a detailed final inspection checking every edge, seam, equipment cutout and drainage point before handing the playground over. We provide documentation of the materials installed and the safety ratings achieved so you have a complete record for your files.

Playground Turf FAQs

Is playground turf safe for children to fall on?

Yes. Playground systems include a shock-absorbing foam or rubber pad beneath the turf, rated to a Critical Fall Height that sets the maximum safe fall distance for your equipment. We match the pad to the height of your play structures, so the surface delivers the fall protection the equipment calls for.

Is artificial playground turf non-toxic and lead-free?

Yes. Our playground turf is independently tested and certified free of lead and heavy metals, so children who touch the ground or roll on the grass are not exposed to harmful substances. It also produces no grass pollen, which makes outdoor play easier for kids with grass allergies.

Where can playground turf be installed?

We install it for residential backyards, schools and daycares, community parks, and commercial or condo play areas across the GTA. Each project is specified for its user age range and traffic level, from a small home play zone to a busy schoolyard used by hundreds of children a day.

How much maintenance does playground turf need?

Very little. There is no mowing, watering or reseeding. An occasional rinse and a brush of high-traffic lanes keeps it clean and upright, and the surface drains quickly so it is usable again soon after rain. Solid debris is easy to pick up or blow off.

Does playground turf get muddy or freeze in winter?

No. The free-draining base underneath carries rain and snowmelt straight through, so the surface never turns to the mud a natural play area becomes. In winter snow simply melts through, and the turf is backed by our 10-year warranty for long-term peace of mind.
